Best online University to aquire a Masters?

Asharus

Senior member
My company provides 100% Tuition reimbursement, and Phoenix University offers a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems.

My undergraduate degree is B.S. in Computer Programming/Information Systems. Is it better to take a Masters related to my Bachelor degree? My sister says that MBAs are worthless these days...

Does anyone have any experience w/ phoenix.edu?

A paper degree from an actual university will have infinitely more value than a 'virtual degree' from an online university.

That's all I'm going to say.

I think some give you the paper degree

Real ones do, yes. Some fake ones do as well. If you find the right "online university" it's as easy as writing out a $1,500 check for each level of degree...

University of Phoenix does not operate that way.

Very.

Asharus: as long as your company is covering tuition, UOP is a good choice. The classes are pretty difficult, but allow you to finish a lot faster than most traditional schools. I'd also check out schools in your area, to see what kind of online programs they have. UOP is now offering an MIS and MIS/M (Master of Information Systems/Management).

Personally, I'd stay away from University of Phoenix. Without going into detail, let's just say that I have personal knowledge of their business practices.

No, I don't work for them, nor was I ever employed there. I wasn't a student, either.

So do i, and i disagree. I'd recommend them (only if you aren't paying for it...expensive).

There are a lot of private colleges with distance-learning programs. I believe Stanford and Carnegie Mellon U. have one.

Carnegie Mellon's web site can be found at west.cmu.edu.

it's still a half-@ss school for those who won't take the effort to attend a real institution

MBAs from good business schools are very good things to have, assuming you can afford to get them. Of course a masters in anything is better than a bachelors. It all depends where you want to go with your career; fast track the management side of things, or stick with the more technical.

What do you do for an online masters anyway? Based on what friends are doing for theirs (some CS, some not) I'm really interested in how it would be handled. Especially considering some of the equipment you might need access to for whatever you wind up working on.

I was directing this question to Encryptic. Quote: "let's just say that I have personal knowledge of their business practices."

I want to know what they do over there that's so bad.

Have you taken classes there? The classes at UOP i've taken in the past have been much harder than the real institution i've attended.

From what I have heard about some of these that they are not actually accredited or acknowledged by other universities. This doesn't really mean much unless you ever plan to get your doctorate.

Yes, it means a lot. If you take classes at an unaccredited university you can't transfer them to other schools, so if you took a full Bachelors program at an unaccredited school, you won't be able to take a masters program at an accredited school.

UOP is accredited Schools such as University of Minnesota and Purdue are accredited by the same body.

In the interest of covering my ass, I'm not going to say any more than that. Sorry. 😉

Perhaps your real institution isn't up to par either
