I need help picking out the best of Metallica. Since there's not much in the way of "Best of" compilations (not interested in live performances), I need recommendations on 3 (4 TOPS) of their best albums to purchase.

I would almost totally agree with that...except that Black 'can' be higher than that, depending on taste. I personally would put it right where you did, but I can accept other people putting it higher...as long as Master stays in the #1 slot.

pre-Black Album is all good. You can't go wrong with all/any of the albums before Black.

The thing with Metallica is... although their style was much better pre Black Album, there weren't as many hits on those CD's. I like a majority of the songs on the Black album, S&M, Load, etc. When it comes to albums like And Justice for all, I enjoyed One... but the rest seemed to lack a bit.

Kill 'Em All
And Justice for All

For me the order of their albums from best to worst is simply sorting them in chronological order from oldest to newest

How can you say that Hero of the Day, No leaf clover, Bleeding Me, Until it Sleeps, Mama Said and all the S&M stuff is crap? These are some of their best songs, imo.

The problem with Justice is the bass is washed out in the studio....live it kicks unbelievable ass.

I would definitely agree with this order and thank you for leaving off any other albums by them. After Black, I just can't even tolerate them in the least little bit. Even Black was borderline "sell out" for me personally, but there are some really good songs on it so it's definitely worth having.

Man, I'm having flashbacks to riding around in my first car at 16 and blaring Garage Days Revisited on cassette. :D

Not that difficult if you're a Metallica purist. Most hardcore Metallica fans just flat out refuse to like or accept anything produced after 1991. I tried but just couldn't get into it. I'm not saying the songs aren't good but when I think of who "Metallica" is, I can't see beyond the Black album.

I guess i'm doing my self a disservice by only listening to the S&M album. I guess its tme for me to expand my horizons when it comes to metallica, or not.

I don't know about anyone else, but I thought St. Anger was trash.

I would move the Justice album up to the number 2 spot and this would work for me too.

I actually thought, st. anger was a pretty good cd. Some good songs on their,No filler songs at all. Of course it isnt as good as their old stuff, but st. anger is still probably the best cd when compared to its current competition. That album couldve had a chance had they not used the whole anger theme.

It would be a decent effort for a band like Linkin Park, but it is in no way a Metallica album, and with their name on it, its absolute crap.

Justice just wasn't as good as it could have been because of the washed out bass, that's why I put it where I did.
