Best of Breed sniffers.. what is out there to chose from??

Besides Network Associate's Sniffer Pro and the freeware Ethereal.

What else is everyone out there using?

I have budgeted around $5000 (could be way low for sniffer product)

What can be had for around this amount?

I was looking at Appdancer.. anyone heard of them or use them?

I actually just like ethereal. I think wildpacket's etherpeek is pretty popular. Eeye's Iris is pretty much a sniffer and looks pretty nice although I've never used it. I would imagine there is a sniffer of some sort in Solarwinds' various toolsets.

What are you wanting to do with it? Ethereal's free and works fine for me, but at the most I'd drop say $1000 on Eeye's........

etherpeek is about the next best thing in the low cost category.

Although NAI's sniffer is still the king, at a price though. I recently told NAI to take a flying leap after some of the pricing offered.

<---been a sniffer customer for 7 years and told them to get lost. 🙂

What are you looking for? Ethereal is a packet capture application with some extremely limited analysis. It is designed to allow you to capture packets and view the contents. Sniffer is designed to capture data and let you view the contents, but also provide automated analysis of the results to find common L2 and L3 problems. If you're a novice, you probably want Sniffer Pro. If you're looking for the basics, Ethereal is good.

I guess the simple requirments are what can I get for around $5000 and have remote agent capabilites?

I havn't had a full blown demo of the NAI product yet but from what I saw at our sister company I wasn't impressed. (They probably didn't know how to use it)

Also cost and confusion was a problem with the NAI product. Man do they have a huge suite of Sniffer products.

I think I was quoted in the 40k+ for what I wanted in remote agents and sniffer pro modules.

I have been avoiding them like the plague ever since hehe.

I guess I could play around more with etheral .. ill take a look at etherpeek and Iris. I have heard of Iris before.

Anyone out there used Appdancer product? It has a nice looking user interface that easily shows conversation but I don't really care for the Java feel.
