I want to expand my knowledge in computers & technology. I'm 22 years old I've never been self sufficient nor had a job in my life. It's time I become successful in life. I compare myself to other people who are better at math than me :( I want to feel less inferior & improve my math skills to become a computer software engineer. I need hands on learning experience to become computer software engineer. What is best in campus computer software engineering program in New Jersey or in USA? Is there a online college course computer/technology hardware repair program that's similar to this program I linked below? I like best of the worlds. Online courses & campus courses. In my life I get easily overwhelmed I've been really overwhelmed by so many choices & decisions about which online course or in campus colleges is right for me? Also should I listen to this guy discussing about Comptia being a waste of money? Link to video below

How have you been living since high school?

So for past 4 years since High school I still have not gotten a job in my life. The sad fact is I am not a typically developing 22 year old. I have ASD. I had a hard time getting a job & interacting with people. For the past 3 years I have been attending a vocational school that helps people cope with life's issues & they have job training. I work in culinary to help me work better with people.

IT and Comp Sci are completely different. You don't want to do IT if you want to get into Software Engineering, you want to do Computer Science. Or people who are Electrical Engineers also sometimes become SWE's as I've worked with a few.

Certifications for SWE means nothing. Real world experience and being able to show what you have done is way more valuable than having any type of certification. I'd say real world experience is worth even more than having a degree. However the problem is it's very hard to get that initial experience and get into a company without a degree. Some companies will take years experience in place of degrees but not all of them.

But sorry I can't really help with information about online courses and stuff. I went to physical school to get my comp sci degree although it took me 5 years not 4.

If you want to learn on your own it depends what you want to get into. Going the webapp path is a lot different than say, going the desktop path, which is different than the mobile path, which is way different than going the game developer path. So it really depends what you are looking to get into. They all do however have a ton of overlapping concepts that once you understand many of the concepts, can translate between technologies and types of software.

My son is graduating from UMass Boston, he did both online & on campus courses. There were advantages to each option but having to get up & out of the house everyday, learning to interact with people is very important. College helps teach every day life skills that are important. My son has Autism & he learned a lot of things he didn’t want to hear about from his nagging mother.

Social graces, manners, how to interact with others fairly, you don’t get that from online courses & peers have a way of getting the point across that tends to stick with a person
