best of best ide cd-roms / cdrws? (how can you replace a plextor? <sniff>)

Ok, I'm currently trying to sell my SCSI Plextor 40x...and I feel horrible trying to replace it, as clearly nothing can.

So the question is, what IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM can come closest? My only real needs right now are:
1) the ability to read anything and everything (as my plextor does so well).
2) to some extent, speed, especially in DAE
3) but to a new level, something quiet...the plextor is fairly quiet as it is.

I'm also on the market to get an 8x or 12x burner...does everyone agree that the latest models don't have any problems when compared to the older stuff? I've been living life fine with my original Philips 2x CDRW, but its too slow, and granted it does some things newer ones dont because back then they had no idea what they were doing 🙂 overburning comes to mind...i'll probably just get a plextor 12x, i can always trust those.

thanks to all ahead of time.

Staples is currently having a special on a Delta 50X CDROM for $30-20 = $10. AVOID the temptation to buy this drive. I just purchased it and it WILL NOT read many of the CDs that I am trying to archive. It is very loud (sounds like a vacuum cleaner). This is a real dog!

According to storagereview it looks like the Kenwood 72x and Creative 52x drives are the best.

The Kenwood is a bit pricy though, an I was planning on getting the Creative from allstar for a mere 34+7 shipped. Any complaints?

Anything about CDRWs I should know? I'm in between an Acer 8x, Yamaha 8x and HP 10x, all priced around the same (just around $100)

If you don't mind the extra cash, get a Pioneer DVD, I've had a 10x and 16x and they both worked great! They're quiet, fast, and read better than any CD I've owned. They're about $100, so it's not a cheap solution.

I have a Creative 52x in my server and it's a great drive. Sounds a little like an SR-71 with it's afterburners lit when it's first spinning up but other than that I recommend it.

I'll give another recommendation for a Creative 52x. This thing reads just about ANYTHING (*note: Havent tried CDRW with it yet...gotta get someone to write me one quick) 🙂 But it is really loud. Ive learned not to run any CDs when Im trying to sleep...cause if this thing has to spin up or down get ready for the cats to howl in terror...🙂

As to a burner, I'd really recommend either a Plextor 12/10/32 or else their new 16x burner. Really easy to install, and have had no problems come up with the units Ive installed for others
