Just wondering which notebook would be the best bang for the buck with either one of these cards. Also, why does HP only offer a craptastic Geforce4 440 in their new Athlon 64 notebook?

IMO, the eMachines M6805\6807 are the best bang for the buck laptops out now.

Dell also has some new laptops with the 9600/9700, but I don't know much about them. They're using the Pentium 4 Mobile (rather than the P4-M/Centrino chipset), and are heavier 'desktop replacement' type laptops. I'd love to see a Centrino-based lightweight system with one of these cards in there, but nobody seems to have made one yet.

EMachines does seem to be best bang/buck lately, and the laptops seem to be WAY better than their desktops.

The Dell 8600 has a Pentium-M/Centrino chip and uses the 9600 Pro Turbo as an add-on adapter.

T41p has the 128MB Firegl T2 which is a "souped up" version of the 9600.
I had the T40 2373-58U it was the best notebook I had, solid, well built, sturdy, no cheap plastic, or fake chrome.

Emachines M6805\6807 is another choice. 9600 64Mb Some people in the forums, believe is a bad, unreliable company. Don't take people's opinions to heart, you have to make a decision for yourself. Low price. I never owned a Emachines so I cannot help you in this department.

Dell the 8500 8600 and the newer xps? Not sure. I owned the 600m. I didn't like it one bit, the keyboard was flimsy, cheap plastic was used to build the notebook. Probably to lower production costs. These days I hear that Dell has been listening to some consumer complaints and fixing some problems.

Overall, I will go for the T41p, but it will cost you a pretty penny.

Heh the reason the M6805/6807 only comes with DDR333 is price. They figure most people won't notice it too much. If they actually stuck with DDR400, that would jack up the prices a lot considering DDR400 SODIMMS are still relatively rare. I'b be willing to bet price would go up at least another 100-200. Sure it would increase performance but I suppose eMachines thought the economics didn't work out to their favor.

Yeah if you want no compromise power but still at a decent price the new Inspiron 9100 deal is pretty sweet....but it's HEAVY (9lbs). Not something you want to be carrying around (except to the occasional LAN party) and I'm willing to bet battery life is utterly craptacular. Also, it's not an Athlon 64 ;). If portability and price are concerns i'd stick with the M6805 deal cause it's the cheapest and probably one of the lightest (7.5lbs) and mine's plays just about every game I have really well. Def go VoodooPC or Sager if you don't care about price. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any lighter weight (<=6lbs) notebooks with these vid cards yet.

Me likey my HP NC8000. I've been enjoying Call of Duty, MOH:AA, SW:KotOR, and C&C Generals on it.

1.7Ghz P-M, 1.5GB RAM, 64MB 9600Pro, 15" SXGA+ (1400x1050).

Ah, so it does. They list it on the model summary page as coming with a GeForceFXGo 5200, whereas the 9100 and XPS are listed with the RADEON 9600Pro, and the 600m comes with the R9000.
