Looking for a really nice scanner under $100 for my brother for Christmas. He doesn't have USB capability on his computer though. Any suggestions?

Motero, while I don't have model numbers for you, HP and UMAX used to have sub $100.00 scanners that were not USB. Try the office supply stores as they tend to carry the older models longer. Hope this helps.

The HP 3400's are good. Not sure they're under $100 though. I would go with a UMAX though.

The HP 3400 is around $80...The new UMAX Astra w/ double the hardware resolution is $100...but the website doesn't say if it has parallel connectivity. The HP one does though. Anyone know if it does before i email support?

My advice is to get the USB scanner, and also a little $20 USB card for his computer as well.

Total cost should start at around $60 for both of these items.

He might have USB ports on his computer, but I haven't had any luck with getting anything USB to work on an "older" computer. Think I'd have to do some upgrading for it to work? He has a k6-2 500 mhz system.

Thanks.

You shouldn't have to.. Win98 comes with USB support out of the box. It's
Win95 that needed a patch (and even then, most USB device manufacturer's
didn't bother writing drivers for Win95)

As long as its Win98 and there are USB ports on the back of the computer,
there shouldn't be any problems.
