Best non-SLR camera...

So what are some of the best (in terms of picture quality) non-SLR cameras out there? I'm looking to get into photography, but SLR's are a bit expensive and are quite an investment for a first-timer. I have a budget of 400-600 bucks.

Yeah if you REALLY want to get into Photography then a point and shoot digital is not going to help very much. Just save some money and you can get a Digital SLR for not much more than what your budget already is, I have even seen some Digital Rebels for around 500 or so (but of course I'd never get a canon, I'll stick with my Nikon D70). Or you could find a film SLR and start there learning the basics.

best non digital camera in terms of photo quality would have to be the canon powershot g6. its the closest you'll get to dslr quality photos. however, for the best of the best, dslr like a canon drebel (300d or xt or 20d) or nikon d70 is the way to go. just be prepared to spend lots of money on glass, though.

Ah right...must be digital 😛 I hate not being able to see my pics after taking them 😉

Well I looked into a bunch of SLRs a few weeks ago and the cheapest DRebel XT I saw was for about 850 including an 18-55 lens. I haven't seen any SLRs go for less than 700 bucks for the body only, so I figured they were out of my range.

Where could I find used cameras, and how good are they? I'm kind of afraid to get an expensive camera off of flebay.

Thanks all.

Ok...I found a DRebel 300D at Buydig for about 600 bucks, and at the same place I can find a 28 - 105 lens for about 130. So for about 750 bucks, I could get started?

Oh and one more thing, what does USM mean when it comes to lenses? There's the 28 - 105 USM for 150 and the 28 - 105 regular for 130. Just curious.

USM means UltraSonic Motor. In lens focusing motors that are smaller and more efficient than copper wire motors. They are based on electro-magnetic fields and are much quieter as well.

USM = UltraSonic Motor. It's what moves the lens elements for autofocus.

Another thing you will see is IS, which is Image Stabilization.
It's something the lens does to prevent image shake, allowing you to gain about 2 f-stops when shooting hand held. A really nice feature.

I really don't know what the "hassle" of an DSLR is. You can always set it on idiot mode (aka automatic) and it becomes a point and shoot. Well a point and shoot with the option to use all of Canon's and third party lenses.

If you can swing the SLR, it's a good thing.
