My sister has a PC and is interested in Buying a new 19" monitor. She is currently employed in a Graphic Design Field and is looking for a good monitor for programs like 3D Video Max, Adobe Packages (PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc.) She does both print and video media.

I have suggested the Samsung 955DF, which is what I have and have found it works for me, but I thought maybe some of you might have better insite into this type of work. Her budget is probably in the $300 ball park and I have seen the Samsung at $235.10 from Dell.

Her ideal platform would be to by a G4, but since she just graduated college and is working on school loans she figures the monitor is the quick and more cost effective solution.

Thanks for any help you can provide and let me know if there is any other info you need to make a more educated suggestion.

The 955 DF is that invar shadow mask, so it's not a true flat. I'm not sure how much that matters, to me I notice a difference thus I bought the Samsung 900NF, which is a very very very... nice monitor. That though cost me around $400. The 955DF can be had for a very cheap price, there's also a rebate from Samsung's site, so that $235 from Dell I think there's a $50-100 rebate for it.. so you can get it damn cheap.

Nonetheless, go take a look at both of them if you can before you buy it.

I have a 955df and have only good things to say about it.
It's the best bang for the buck...

Get the 900NF, it's a aperature grill and it looks better with graphics work. It'll only run you around $350 right now (probalby less).

$300 is pretty tough to get a really good 19".

a few to consider are the samsung 900nf and the LG915ft+.

I own the samsung, but prefer the LG, and around here, it's cheaper by a good amount.

Thanks for the info so far!

I have been looking around at the 955df and the 900nf, so far the best prices I have come up with are from Dell.com

$235.10 for the Samsung 955df (Using the Free Shipping, 25 off 100, and 10% off stackable)
$325.51 for the Samsung 900nf (Using the Free Shipping, 25 off 100, and 10% off stackable)

Anyone seen a better deal on these elsewhere?

Thanks again for all of the info you have provided!

If she's doing graphic design, AG type screens are going to be better than shadow masks. I'd suggest the Dell P992. It's based on Sony's flat FD trinitron tube (which, along with Mitsubishi's current generation NF tube, are the two best on the market). It does up to 1920x1200 at 75hz and can do 1600x1200 at 85hz. It's $318.20 shipped right now (up to 1/7/02), with no tax to most states.

<< Personally, I'd have to go with the LaCie Electron 19 Blue III. >>

LaCie's Electron 19 Blue III uses last generation's Mitsubishi Diamondtron AG screen (.25-.27mm), one generation back from the $318.20 Dell P992 monitor (current gen FD trinitron and NF diamondtron are .24 or .24-.25mm across screen). It also uses a slower dotclock so it can only support 1600x1200 at 76hz, as opposed to 1920x1200 at 75hz and 1600x1200 at 85hz. Is the LaCie that much cheaper that it's worth the difference?
