Anybody have any good recommendations for a good over-the-ear headphones? Not something obscenely expensive, say under 100 dollars or so. Thanks.

Sennheiser hd280s have some of the best attenuation of outside noise available, something like 32dB. I'd demo some active noise-cancelling phones before buying them, the whole thing seems gimmicky to me and most who've heard them say sound quality suffers. Whatever you do, don't get that garbage Bose is peddling.

i second the hd280 pro i was recently looking for someone looking for the same kind of thing and that was my best suggestion.
never used them specifically.
noise cancelling is kind of cool though, with loud music it might change quality/not be worth it, but if you are listening to music quietly and dont want to hear traffic or someone talking, i think its really good.

I've had the HD 280 pros for ~two years now and I really enjoy them. You can get them for well under $100 which is an excellent deal for the quality. My only complaints are:

The wire comes only from the left side and is quite heavy due to the "spring" style... it can get tiresome if you have the fully weight just hanging from the phones, I drape the cord across my desk to attenuate that though.

They don't block sound well unless you're listeing to music (which is not true for active cancelling phones... you can just put them on and have active silence without music...).

That being said, I recommend the HD 280's but they're not perfect and I would like some active cancelling (though they tend to require batteries to work... which would suck for a desktop solution). Oh, that reminds me, the HD 280's fold up nicely for travel, but they're still rather bulky comopared to some of the other solutions (that don't fully cover your ear).

Isn;t noise cancelling just throwing static into your ears so they naturally ignore things that soft?

In the 280's case, it's just making a good seal with your head to keep noise out (like wearing a pair of earmuffs). This is passive noise cancelling.

With active noise cancelling I believe the headphones listen to background noise that's outside and then it plays the inverted version of the soundwaves to they interfere with each other and cancel each other out so you don't hear anything.
(I have never looked into active noise cancelling headphones, so I'm not sure if that's really how they work or not, so someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I have the Sennheiser and the Bose. Both are comfortable. Both have fair noise canceling circuitry. Both sound so-so with the noise canceling circuitry off, but the Bose is slightly better. All in all give Bose the edge. I carry an ultralight Koss in my luggage to use when I get to my hotel room. The Bose is bulky. With your lappy, ipod, headphones and assorted stationery why do you want the bulky Bose on your carry-on?. Get the Sennheiser.

noise canceling works on low frequency noise... like engine noise in airplanes. if thats what you need it for, get the bose.

Bose blows. Get Sennheiser. I just ordered the 280 Pros after trying them at J and R today.

no, depends on use. if for use on planes and such the bose is very good. and it doesn't headclamp like the 280. the 280 is bang for buck but its not everything

It all depends, for cancelling out most outside noise, closed headphones are fine. But yes, for loud, low constant noise, such as a lawnmower or airplane, I've heard that active noise cancelling is better at blocking the noise, allowing you to hear your music at lower volumes, thus avoiding potentially damaging your ears. However, all Bose products are ripoffs. Philips makes some ~$40 active noise cancelling canalphones which a few people here and on head-fi say aren't too bad, certainly better than the $300 Quiet Comforts  Active noise cancelling won't please the audiophiles, but for the purpose of drowning out constant droning noise it might be the better choice over passive.
