Best no frills MP3 player for the money?

Here's my situation: I listen to music a lot at work and in the car. I have a 30 minute each way commute 4 days a week, plus I'll be doing lots of 7-12 hour road trips now that I've moved away from all my friends and family. My car plays MP3 CD's and has a 6-disc changer, but as you can imagine that music gets stale quickly. I want to be able to quickly drop a bunch of new songs onto an MP3 player and go.

My car has a mini-stereo input to the CD player so I can plug an MP3 player in easily. I don't want to get into Apple/iTunes, so no suggestions there please.

An easy to read display will be important, so I can see what's playing in my car. Capacity should be minimum 8GB, truly preferring 16GB+. I prefer Flash to HDD for obvious reasons, but I'm open.

EDIT A quick look shows nothing in the low-end region with 16GB. I guess this makes sense. Given this player would be a stopgap until I can pick up a Zune HD 32GB, 4-8GB is okay. TY

Doesn't need an FM tuner, video playback, etc. Just good old MP3. Long battery life or capability to be recharged in-car is a major plus.

Cost? Really as low as possible. Hopefully well under $100. I'd love a new Zune HD, but that won't happen this year.

Aren't there some cheap players (Sansa maybe?) that show up refurb'd a lot and can be flashed with a slick open-source firmware that opens up a lot of functionality?

Thanks in advance folks

Sansa is pretty much the king of cheap MP3 players right now. If you want a large screen get the Sansa Fuze. Otherwise if you just want a small screen to see the currently playing track get the Clip.

Thanks. I looked at the Clip and it seems pretty decent. I'd love to find a refurb'd one. Also need to decide if 4GB will hold me until I can get the Zune HD, or if I should spend the coin for 8GB...hmmm...

I have a Sansa e260 and I really like it. I put rockbox on mine as well. Just realise that Vista support is kind of hit or miss for installing Rockbox.

Well I read some reviews on the e280 and ehhhh. The 8GB is nice, but looking at my music collection I have at most 2.75GB that I would load on to the MP3 player. Figuring that's over 700 songs, I don't see myself getting enough songs to hit almost 4GB before I get a Zune HD. That said, I found a 4GB Sansa Clip refurb for $30. I like the features of the Clip and it seems like the usability has been ironed out. I think that might be the way to go...
