IMO, back then, nirvana kids were depressed and angry, and smashing pumpkins kids were depressed too, but more in touch with their feelings. It's the melancholy sadness, baby.

Anyway, back on topic:

your favorite songs from either of the bands?

Never liked Nirvana, Pumpkins had a few good songs. The one with the video where they were on the moon was good.

You know you're right

Bullet With Butterfly Wings

Many others are good, too. I like "today", from SP, and Verse Chorus Verse from Nirvana.

Uh, there was nothing about Smashing Pumpkins that played to angst or teen stupidity. Go back and give them another listen

Anyway, for the Pumpkins, it's damn hard to pick, but my favorite track is probably "Muzzle".

Was gonna make it a Nirvana thread only, but I was a huge SP fan so I tossed 'em in there on a whim.

I still have tonight and disarm on my ipod

Disarm and Tonight Tonight were good.

One problem with the Smashing Pumpkins was that they were too complex in their music. There was just too much going on in the music so they started to drowned themselves out.

As for Nirvana....Kurt might have been the front-man, but David Grohl was the genius.

I have Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie, and Machina. Both in hard copy, and ripped to my HDD. 4 albums, 5 discs, great band.

Never really had a desire for their "unreleased" and b-sides bits. IMO, Corgan and Co. were right to cut them off the albums - they weren't as good as the other stuff. Also, their Adore album was just useless because Jimmy Chamberlain was not on board. Being that he's about the best drummer ever, his prescence was essential.

All yous noting Tonight, Tonight, Disarm, Bullet WBW, have you guys actually heard much aside from the singles?

Just curious - I mean, I don't hold it against you if you haven't, but these songs, by Pumpkins standards, are pretty average. There were much better cuts that never made it to radio.

Doh - had to mention Rhinocerous - that song got me into SP in the first place.

The entire Siamese Dream album though, imho, is just about the most amazing CD to me, ever. Ranks right up there with RageATM's first. I hold Rush: Chronicles in high regard too. It's a pretty exclusive list.

IMO, Smashing Pumpkins = best rock band of the 90s decade, Rage = #2.

Good calls

This needs a poll... take the songs that most people are posting and put them in 2 lists one for each band.

That said, disarm and rape me.

Quiet, definitely.

And you're right, the siamese dream album was absolutely amazing.
