Best Nintendo DS games for young girls (5 & 7)

This seemed like the best forum to post this question, feel free to suggest another forum if I am wrong.

It looks like my daughters aged 5 and 7 are getting Nintendo DSi XL's this Christmas.

Is there a good site that reviews or ranks the best games available for this system?

Or, do you have suggestions?

Also, what are the "must have" peripherals?

I know squat about these systems, just that all their friends have them...

Thanks!

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Dementium
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

On a more serious note,

The Mario RPGs might be good. Like Mario&Luigi Bowser's inside story
Then there are also games like Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory
For simple fun there is New Super Mario Bros.
Don't forget pokemon!

There really isn't any must-have peripheral, though some people will probably suggest a screen protected. I've never used one and don't see a need for it, and actually find they get in the way of controls and make the stylus infuriating to use.

For reviews, http://www.metacritic.com/games/ds

Mario RPG might be complex for a 5 year old man.

How about some really simple shit like "elite beat agents?"

I don't speak from experience but I also see Professor Layton mentioned a lot. Probably worth a look.

...I guess

I was playing RPGs as a kid...

I think RPGs are good for children. They have lots of reading. Improves their literacy.

Thanks for the suggestions all, will look in to each of them.

Children typically learn to read in first grade, around the age of 6.

my girls don't have the ds but they were interested in the iCarly ds game commercial. they also liked the fashion games commercials. these typically let you design clothes and then have a fashion show and then score better depending on specific criteria.

you can go to ign.com to get reviews on ds games.

I think Professor Layton is probably too tricky for all but the brainiest 5-7 year olds.

Other titles which might be good candidates:

Cooking Mama
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Kirby's Canvas Curse
WarioWare: Touched/D.I.Y.

I would recommend Animal Crossing DS. My 8 year old has been playing that with her friends and cousins for a few years now. The game has a lot of reading, and teaches the basics on economics and such. She also plays Mario Kart DS and the Kirby games. Although, the Kirby Canvas one was a bit frustrating for her, I had a lot of fun with that one while I borrowed her DS durring my trips to the bathroom.

Oh yah, she loved Super Princess Peach as well.

My 5 year old boy plays nothing but racing games on his. Mario Kart and the simple Hot Wheels games. Had him try some platformers and rpgs, but he was not interested in those at all.

Just want to mention that Hotel Dusk is pretty much all text, and does have some swearing ("D*mn). It's got a murder to solve too. Might be too intense for the young 'uns.

Definitely agree with Animal Crossing.

You can go wrong with New Super Mario Bros.

I'd also highly recommend rhythm heaven - it may be a little tough on certain games, but it's a lot of fun regardless!

My 7 year old has had a DS for about 2 years now.
She has A LOT of games. She plays pretty much NOTHING but Sribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts.

She enjoyed animal crossing for a bit.

I scored at ToysRUs today. I got the last two copies of Puzzle Quest 2 for my daughter and my niece, $19.99 each and they have a deal right now, all games $19.99 or less are buy one get one 40% off.

If you can find them in stock, your 7 year old would probably like Puzzle Quest.
