Ouch, just found out that the DFI one uses the c-media sound and not Nvidias Realtek with Soundstorm and that if you use the ONE sata port it dissables the Primary IDE when in use!!!!!!!!! What were they thinking!!!!!!!!!!!! That could have been one cool board.
I own the DFI KT400A LanParty, and without a doubt, it is the best KT motherboard yet.
I'll have the NForce2 LanParty monday, and I am sure it will be everything that almost every review site says it is: the best Nforce2 board.
Here is a question that I just answered in another forum about the SoundStorm & DFI LanParty NF2:
SoundStorm Qualification
Specifications
The NVIDIA SoundStorm? audio product requires a specific hardware
configuration to be useful. OEM products can carry the SoundStorm brand if they
meet the following criteria with no exceptions:
1. nForce2 Platform Processor-based motherboard that includes the MCP-T with
Dolby Digital
2. Discrete (non-shared) front left and right analog outputs
3. Discrete (non-shared) rear left and right analog outputs
4. Discrete (non-shared) center and subwoofer analog outputs
5. Discrete (non-shared) SPDIF digital output (Coax recommended, Optical is optional)
6. Discrete (non-shared) line in analog inputs
7. Discrete (non-shared) microphone analog input
8. Minimum 85db signal-to-noise ratio on all analog outputs
9. Minimum 80db signal-to-noise ratio on all analog inputs
10. Executed a Dolby Digital licensing agreement
11. Dolby Digital certification approval from Dolby and NVIDIA
This list is comprised of feedback from end users and OEMs.
Products that do meet these conditions qualify for the SoundStorm brand and are
also eligible for the Dolby Digital brand logo. Note, however, that products cannot
get the Dolby certification without participating in the SoundStorm program .
This means that the APU isn't a soundstorm chip (or limited to a specific brand/make of chip). Its whatever apu the motherboard has, but it MUST meet the requirements above (this is from the nVidia PDF sent to motherboard manufacturers).
One of the techs also forwarded this information to me (to prepare me for when I install it lol):
You can't use the Microphone and Aux In at the same time. But an extra 4 channel audio cable will take care of this issue.
The major drawback that most users have claimed to have kept them from a DFI LanParty is the lack of mounting holes around the ziff socket. My KT LP has them, and the Intel Pro875 has them, but not the NForce2. DFI hopes to resolve this with the next revision. I figure they probably didn't realize the importance to enthusiasts who want to overclock, since the Nforce2 is the top dog (at least on the AMD side).
It is true that using the single-channel SATA channel will disable the Primary IDE. But with 2 extra IDE channels (RAID ports), this shouldn't be a large issue, though some users do have a large number of hard drives in their system.
If you have any other questions on the DFI series of motherboards, I'd be more than happy to answer them!
