something capable of specifically handling nzb files (and maybe filtering everything else out) would be awesome for my public domain downloading needs.

I recently returned to XNews, but there's got to be a better/more modern program out there. I keep getting "out of memory" errors when processing a large number of headers, which I'm assuming is program-related (since I have 12gb ram and xnews isn't coming anywhere close to using a signifcant amount)

Try it. If you like it - buy it.

\and if you do, try the Internet Search service they offer - simply amazing.....
\\public domain wise, that is...

Newsleecher is the best IMO for downloading binaries. Haven't used Xnews in many years.

is there a feature on SABnzbd that I'm missing that allows you to browse newsgroups? all I see is the web interface that handles nzb files already on your computer, but nothing that assists with actually finding the files in the first place.

No, you're not missing anything. SABnzbd is only designed to process nzb, not find them.
