If you want a hatch, and don't mind a wagon, the Saab 9-2X is under $18,000 after the $5,000 rebate 🙂

It's basically a Subaru Impreza wagon with a facelift. It will be quite reliable, safe, and will be about the best vehicle you could buy in the price range for winter mountain runs.

if you can only afford 18K, AND you have to finance it (BTW 6.75% is NOT a good rate), you cannot afford the VW's poor reliability, expensive service, and poor resale value. it's one thing to pay through the nose to keep a BMW running, but for a VW rabbit? uh, no.

Depending on the length of the loan, 6.75 isn't horrible. Have you checked rates lately? That's the same rate that my local credit union is charging and they typically have the lowest ones out there.

Interest rates are very, very high right now compared to what they have been the last 5 years.
