I recently picked up a galaxy nexus and was curious. I searched google play store and there's tons of emulators for both NES and SNES, but which do you guys prefer?

I use SNES9X EX and NESoid. Snes9X was free download off the official website and NESoid I got for free from Getjar when it was pulled from Google appstore and the developer made it available for free for limited time on Getjar.

Can you use these types of emulators (specifically an SNES one) on a Samsung Galaxy S3 from Verizon with the locked bootloader, or do emulators require an unlocked phone? Could I put individual game ROMs on a Micro SD card, or do they need to be on the phone's internal memory (I was reading that apps can't be put on a Micro SD card on that phone, but I wasn't sure about data that apps access)? I'm getting that phone in the next couple days and this might be the difference between opting for the 32 GB over the 16 GB version.

They are apps available in the app store not some bootleg junk you need to load on a rooted phone. I put my roms on my sd card.

You know what's funny, I swore to myself I would be happy with Yongzh's free oid emulators on slide.me, but then I thought about future updates, optimization with new chipsets and Android variants and support for more controllers as they come out so I ended up buying the best of the crop.

PSX: FPSE https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5lbXVsYXRvci5mcHNlIl0.

Mupen64 for N64, unfortunately it got taken down from the play store again :/

SNES: SuperGNES https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImNvbS5idWJibGV6YXBnYW1lcy5zdXBlcmduZXMiXQ..

Much slicker and cleaner looking than SNESoid and has automatic cover art downloads for your roms as well as GameFAQs integration

NEOEMU: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5leHBsdXNhbHBoYS5OZW9FbXUiXQ..
Clunky UI but the performance is great on my GSII

NES: JohnNES https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwxLDEsImNvbS5qb2huZW11bGF0b3JzLmpvaG5uZXMiXQ..
Completely original emulation engine built from the ground up with a clean rom selection screen, definitely worth a look.

GBA: VGBA https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sult#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5mbXMudmdiYSJd\
Best GBA emulator I've tried, smooth performance and accurate sound output

There's some compatability issues. I know snesoid has problems playing tales of phantasia because of some libraries not implemented, but I have no issues playing most other stuff. Secret of Mana, final fantasy, chrono trigger, etc.

Am I the only one who can't use the on screen controls for shit on action games on a phone? It's frustrating enough that it's not worth playing games on my phone period. I know you can hook up a joystick to your droid to play some games but honestly I'm not going to carry around a bulky gamepad with me and if I'm at home, I'm not going to be playing games on my phone.

Do people get these emulators for nostalgia or the neat factor? Or are these games actually playable. And when I say playable, I mean the controls are good enough without making you want to throw the phone across the room.

I've been an avid PC and Console gamer for a really long time so it's not hand eye coordination that's the problem. I guess it's because I'm too competitive and OCD with games and i'm not what you call a casual gamer.

I agree, even with proper input, it's really hard to play most of these games on a phone. I've found some that are fun though on NES and SNES. Trial and error though.

Depends on the game. Platformers are hard. But sports games are not bad. I only play three games: RBI Baseball, Galaga, and Mike Tyson's Punchout. Out of the three I play RBI Baseball 90% of the time. It's just as playable as when I played on the NES with a controller. Still the best baseball game ever made.

Another vote for Snes9X, it just works!
