Best mulch with a good price/performance ratio...

I've been using yard clippings as mulch. It's great because its free, but it's not the prettiest thing, and stuff ends up growing in it, so it's not really serving its purpose.

For those of you who own a home or have any experience, what do you recommend?

And what is the best way to prevent me from having to pull weeds from under my bushes? Isn't there a matt or something you can put down to stop anything from growing underneath? Is that really expensive? That plus rocks would probably be really great, but maybe the most expensive (but most permanent) solution, no?

Thx.

Cedar Chunks, not cedar chips or shredded cedar last the longest of the organic mulches.

Rocks last the longest but heat the ground and cook roots near the surface.

If you want to lay down landscape fabric I suggest you go with the fabric stuff not the perforated plastic. It'll last longer. However, I'd only go with fabric where you have well established plants because the fabric will often shed some water and not allow shallow roots all the moisture they need.

Thanks for the info.

If they are not labeled that way, what are the visible differences between chunks and chips? What kind of price per bag also?
