Is the Derringer really the be all end all of muff pistols?

Old school gals think two rounds of.22 is enough to discourage rape. Any rapists wanna chime in on effectiveness?

My muff pistol's got a high capacity mag. I took out the whole Dallas Cowboys cheerleader line up with one load.

Anyone who would carry anything less is a fool. A .380 of similar size is also acceptable, but it's a big 'why' for me when they make decent sub-subcompact 9's.

Derringers are a fraction of that size

Yes, 'five sixths' is a fraction, but it's awful small difference to make when you're comparing a useless weapon to one that can rapidly fire six 9mm rounds competently.

Your pistol is too big to conceal in a muff. Micropistols, is the Derringer the best?

Eleven and a half inch aluminium barrel. 40mm round. Easy to clean. When fired, it just goes thump.

What's not to like?

Not a big fan of derringers. Yeah, they're fun to play with, but when you weigh their practicality they come up short. Pulling out a derringer and bringing it to bear on a target (even at 7 feet) with a high degree of hitting the target requires a much higher level of dexterity than a conventional automatic. During a situation that requires me to kill someone I prefer a gun that requires the least out of me.

I've taken several gun/self-defense classes in the last year. Every one of the instructors said .22s are great for practice, useless for self-defense. They'll just piss off your attacker.

I'm in love with a .357 Magnum, but it's just too big to carry. :(

Depends on the size of the magazine, eventually they will bleed to death. :p

If you hit an artery, it will take about a minute for the person to bleed to death -according to one of the instructors, and he's seen it happen. A lot of damage can be done in a minute.

If you don't hit an artery, you're screwed. None for me, thank you.

Shot placement trumps caliber by a mile.
I would think this as well. A 22 in the head or chest trumps a 44 in the foot. And, with a .22, the recoil is so much less that it's far easier to get that 2nd, 3rd, 4th... shot off on target. The hydrostatic shock from being struck in the chest cavity is likely to at least momentarily incapacitate an attacker. I'm not sure why people are treating it like a bb gun - it's a lethal round.

At the range pistols are effective at, the chances of disabling a determined attacker with a .22 aren't great in a stressful situation. Sure it can be lethal, but so can a BB gun.

Most small .22's, especially autos, also have a ridiculous amount of trigger pull. A decent shooter with a good SA/DA or striker fire will sound like he has a machine gun by comparison.
