As far as sound quality, features, equalizer, CDDB, the ability to encode MP3s, CPU load.

i've never really seen anyone hold their ground compared to winamp...especially if you get the "MAD" plugin (it decodes them differently and helps sound quality)

cpu load has never been too bad for me, and CDDB works great for cd's and stuff.

plus there's SOOO many plug-ins available for it...it really is the standard

For a no frills player with useful features, I prefer Simple MP3 Maker. This is both a CD ripper and a player. It uses the LAME encoder for cd ripping (good quality), can rip to MP3, OGG, WMA and other formats. I've noticed little cpu load while playing or ripping. Includes a basic waterfall sound display. It has all the features I've ever needed to rip CDs and play back music. Best of all, it has no features that I don't need, download size is only 1 MB, and it is freeware.
