Best MP3 Player Brand?

I just got an iPod mini and love it. Sure apple markets the crap outta the things, but I think the product is good. I had a Creative Labs before this and I have heard a few other brands and I think the apple sounds really good (although the included earbuds suck).

Is is true with the lithium batteries will only last a year?
Only if you kill them. LI and LP batteries don't like to be fully discharged very often. Something like every dozen discharges or more is OK, but not every 3-4, like NIMH. Typically you should keep them around 30% charged, only discharging fully on rare occasions. I can't find the page now, but the ideal way is to discharge to no lower than 30% or so, but then do a full discharge every 30 discharge cycles.

The battery will lose its life, though. A well cared for LI/LP battery can have 75-85% of its original life after about a year. Around 5-7 years, it will die. Some manufacturers will replace them for a fee (Cowon seems to do this), and others you can find aftermarket batteries for (Ipods), for after the warranty runs out.

Fully discharging it very often, or leaving it in a car (heat ruins LI batteries worse than NIMH), will kill it.

For a flashed based mp3 player there's not much difference between them, but I'm a happy user of a Creative TX FM 512MB.
Sound quality, battery life, battery used, display, controls, transfer speed, flash drive capability...I'm afraid there is quite a bit of difference among flash-based players.

I tell you right now, my Ipod battery is rarely discharged ( probably about every 20 charges ) and it only holds about 3 hours of charge.

I have had the unit for about 15 months. I use the unit daily.. I think the 1 year is pretty accurate if it is used heavily. I am readdy for a battery replacement from apple.

The battery in NO way will last 5 years.. Or if it worked in 5 years, it would last for 3 mins.

Is the Ipod itself only 15 months old? Have you ever left it in excessively hot environments (85F or higher, I think, for LIs)? Have you just had bad luck?

IMO, more reason to stick w/ players that don't have intebrated batteries, even though there are so few out there.

If it is under warranty, get it replaced.

Found one. 40%, not 30%. No clear info about heat, except exteme heat.

I've owned the 256mb verison. I was pretty happy with it. It was dependable, light weight and didn't have any problems. I'm debating whether to get the 512mb or 1gb verison.

Another vote for Cowon's iAudio.. They seem to be one of the few where you don't need to use any extra software to put useable files on it. Plus they can use a big range of different audio formats, and have very good sound quality 🙂

Can somebody give me a few options for super high quality sound quality, flash player, and one that doesn't need extra software to transfer files?

Yes, iAudio U2 🙂 It uses an internal rechargeable battery (through USB only unless you buy an adaptor).. if you prefer a normal battery that you can replace, there is the iAudio 5 (1xAAA), or iAudio G3 (1xAA).

Ipod is the best, IMHO, if you are willing to treat that battery like your firstborn child. But if you want a little more flexibility, go with iriver flash player with removable AA battery. The software is a little clumsy but this is a great player. I've heard the Creative players are good too.

As for the iPods and iPod Shuffles do you need to install iTunes to add music to them? Or can you just drag and drop through Windows Explorer? And do they support .WMV formats?

Yes you need to use iTunes which is lame, but I also think there's a Winamp plugin that you can alternatively use. I prefer to just drag and drop to the device.
