I like the way it rips CDs when using wma and I would like to do it with mp3's but the different mp3 creation pack offered don't tell you what encoder they use.
Is there one that uses the LAME encoder or is there a way to make the LAME encoder work with WMP on XP?

I do not know about using WMP, however using EAC with LAME is really very simple. It's a case of loading the program, inserting the CD and EAC has built in support for CDDB (so you don't have to type all the track names etc in) clicking on the MP3 button, then it will go off, do it's thing and give you perfect quality MP3s.

I have just done a search on Google for LAME with Windows Media Player XP, but not found anything.

If you are not willing to try EAC, then here is a bump for ya
