Best Movie Shootouts

Inspired by the Best Movie Car Chases topic...

I have not given it any thought but for starters: Heat, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and The Way of the Gun.

The scene in Heat is without equal IMO. I think that what made it so intense was the fact that they didn't add any background music and you just got to hear what would likely be the realistic effects of cars, people and guns.

I would also add the OK Corral shootout in Tombstone.

Open Range had a really good gunfight.

The Wild Bunch makes the list purely for the fact that the directors of all gunfights since borrow from this movie

The Unforgiven - purely for its (for lack of a better term) baddassery
That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.

I seem to remember a good shootout in Last Man Standing. Also you could pick probably any Sergio Leone flick.

3 of the first 4 replies were John Woo movies, which should tell you something... But yeah, Hard Boiled immediately lept to mind, along with The Killer and Face/Off. Heat is amazing, the Matrix lobby scene is great, but it's real short.

Ugh, I'm trying to think of movie shootouts and all I can think of are the totally retarded ones where the protagonist lands every shot with unerring accuracy (I just watched Shoot 'Em Up, so there you go).

The long action scene in Children of Men? Would that count?

What about some of the scenes in Band of Brothers?

I don't think you can count war genre scenes... I think they are a category of their own separate from this. I could be wrong tho.

While that CoM scene is AWESOME, I wouldn't consider it a shootout. Shootouts generally don't involve tanks and unknown characters on both sides. It should be following a select number of characters that are directly part of the story. Did I mention no tanks?

I'm gonna say the truel in The Good , The Bad, and The Ugly.
No other shootout in any other movie comes close to being as perfect IMO.

the Matrix lobby scene was completely badass the first time I saw it. to this day I enjoy watching that scene.

also the opening scene to Saving Private Ryan.
