In case you are missing an important point, when people say the new printers use tanks with chips, they mean the ink tanks contain a special ID chip so you can only buy ink from the manufacturer of the printer and you can't refill the tanks, which makes the cost of ink about 10x as high as printers that can use generic ink cartridges.

Interesting didn't realize they would do this 🙁 That really sucks. So is there any current printers on the market that don't do this please? If so which ones ? I am talking about as in on the market where you can get them from newegg or circuit city.

Hello PCSL,

I just found out that the HP K5400 series can do much better photo and color printing. HP has the factory default for the ink flow setting set to low to look good on the cost per page numbers. You can go into the advanced settings in the HP printer manager utility and set to higher ink flow. Photos can actually can look like photos. Found a great deal on the K5400tn model (w/ two paper trays and network interface for just $4. more than the base model). If you want the info on the deal, PM me. I'm not going to post it on Hot Deals until I have one nailed down for myself - may take a few days as I'm well over-budget on comp. stuff.

The HP Photosmart models: D5360 and C5280 can print on CD/DVDs.
