I have a friend who took a piece of printer paper, laminated it, and taped it to his desk - makes a rediculously good mousepad for an optical mouse.

I'm using a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical - should be good for any optical mouse.

let me know what you think.

You don't need a mousepad for a non-optical mouse either. I use a pad for my optical because it glides better on the pad, and it reads more accurately.

I have found that with both a microsoft and a logitech optical mouse, I need some sort of "pad" or else they do not track well and the cursor hangs. I think this is 'cuz my cheapo workstation has a shiney fake wood surface. I haven't tried the sheet 'o paper trick yet, but think I will. ;)

spending $15+ on a ratpadz for an optical mouse which wouldn't need a mousepad...totally not worth it

hehe shu8, you new here? One thing we all do around here is buy stuff we don't always need :D

I used my MS optical on a piece of paper for awhile, got sick of it.

GT: I got one from citibank, reminding me of days like mothers day, fathers day. <g>

I find 3M PMS to be a very good companion to the optical mice, consider sUrface 1030 as well.

I don't think I've ever even used a mouse pad :p

Really, if your desk surface is good enough, WHY bother?

3M Precise Mousing Surface, you can'y go wrong with it. I've use one for almost 3 years now ;) though I'm using a track and ball mouse.

At the moment I just use a mahogany desk.

I am thinking of getting a Ratzpad though :)

I find the 3M PMS too small, I mouse off it constantly. After trying a RatPad, I could never go back.

I use a regular rubber backed fabric mousepad for mine. I know I don't "need" one, but after using my mouse for awhile on my keyboard tray, there is a nice worn-out spot where the black finish has rubbed off.

Hey borealiss, I can believe the 2 square feet need while playing Q3, but actually I just measured and my Explorer moves only one inch to move the cursor from one side of the screen to the other.
