It seems like any surface I use that mouse on its movement sucks compared to my mx700.

I like my supermat. It's a massive cloth mousepad (14x17 in), which is almost too big for some deks. Its great for gaming with my mx510. You should be able to find it in office max or office depot (don't remember which), or www.microcenter.com. Get the black one, its the smoothest.

Dunno, but compared to my Intellimouse this mouse is awesome, right now i'm using it on the glossy and somewhat bumpy surface that my desk is made out of ....

In what ways do you find the 900 's movement inferior to that of the 700 ?

The Supermat mousepad is at Micro Center.

I've had an Allsop for 4-5 years and it's still in decent shape. It's worked exceptionally with all of my mice including my current MX510.

I've recently bought the Steelpad QcK
It's a big, cheap, cloth pad which is made of hard cloth (so it woun't lose shape very fast) and has very nice gliding.
