I am assembling a Duron computer, and the only part i have not picked out has been the motherboard. It will sport a Duron 700-800, 64-128 mb pc133 ram, soundblaster pci 128, matrox g400 16 mb singlehead. I will not require raid, , and it will not matter if it is agp 2x or 4x. Can anyone point me to the best value board for this computer? Im looking for cost efficiency, so I dont need the best one out there, but i dont want a crummy brand either.
and can anybody tell me the difference between the kt133 and the kt133e? thank you in advance

oh, and it will be running linux, if that matters at all

are you going to overclock?
the iwill kk266 and the asus a7v133 are the best athlon/duron mobos out IMHO. but if you're not going to overclock you could get a slightly cheaper one based on kt133/kt133e

Abit KT7E comes to mind

check Abit's site for more info on the board.

Also, the KT7E is supposed to be pretty damn overclockable.

And it's hella sexy on the blue PCB.

Yes, I did just say a mobo was sexy....lol

what do you guys think of the ASUS A7V-E? its priced about the same as the ABIT KT7E, but I dont know the differences between them. I seem to be leaning towards the ABIT mobo, since you can do clock increments of 1 MHZ, and it has the extra PCI and ISA slot. plus its "sexy blue" :)
any benefits that would point me to the ASUS instead?

Well, for an older board that'll probably cost alot less I'd suggest the MSI K7T Pro2A (based upon KT133 chipset). Its an incredibly solid board (have yet to have it crash in 3 computers, and it was really easy to setup. While it doesnt support the 133mhz bus thats kinda a moot point with a Duron anyways :) If you want the top of the line socket-a motherboard though, I'd say the Iwill KK266 would float your boat. Costs like $100-115 but absoletly is worth it. I love this board!

Well, if you're interested in the KT133E chip, then I'd say the Abit KT7E, I don't know much of anything at all on the A7VE so I won't Mislead you on that one, anyway check out the review at Hardocp.com about the KT7E, I didn't read it, but I assume it will do good. Thr KT133E chip offers great Ocing abilities and it helps to be on the KT7E also though. If you ony plan to use the motherboad for the Duron only, then I'd certainly look into it, if you plan to get a Thunderbird for it later, look into the KT133A chip. Good motherboards on that are the Asus A7V133, Abit KT7A, Msi K7T Turbo. Have fun ^_^.

alright, I'll be getting the Abit or Asus motherboard. Does anyone know where in Mississauga/Toronto one could buy one of these boards cheap? Everywhere I look they are pretty expensive, ranging from $160 to $210!

I just built an inexpensive system with the Abit KT7E. It is very stable and offers excellent performance. I would go with this board for your Duron.

I'd look at the MSI K7T Turbo. Great Board, and KT133A chipset as opposed to KT133E for about the same price without RAID.

I definitely reccomend the Iwill KK266 or KK266-R. If you're going to put an 800 Duron in it, with some good RAM, you could expect to get 900 with no problems. If it is a good chip, you may even be able to get 1G. I have an OEM 800 Tbird that I'm getting 930 stable on my KK266-R.

I'd say go with the Iwill KK266 or an Asus A7V-133. Either will give you the option of upgrading to a T-bird 266 FSB if need be. As a matter of personal preference, the Iwill board would be my first choice, but the A7V-133 is a solid performer and gives you a RAID 0 option for a bit more money.

jobberd,

Since cost is very important to you I will state again that the Abit K7TE would have the best quality and performance for the money. All of the other boards listed are very good boards (Iwill KK266R is my favorite KT133a board) but for your request the Abit board would be an excellent choice. I would also go with 128mb of ram or 256mb considering the prices currently, buy Crucial due to the quality and price.

I have no trouble running a 750 Duron at an FSB of 133.
