After exhaustive search for a motherboard with pci express capabilities to go with my socket 478 p4, I have come to grips with reality that it is like searching for a golden egg. It is a lost cause and will probably be more trouble than its worth.

So now, I turn to you guys again for help. Im looking for THE BEST agp motherboard to go with my socket 478 p4 that is priced fairly....best bang for my buck and cheaper than $150. I can stretch my wallet a little more if you can endorse that it will knock my socks off.

Right now, Im using an Abit VT7 that is giving me a lot of problems and I think it is bottlenecking my system. So Im looking for a mobo that will give me a performance increase. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and assistance.

BTW...this motherboard must have 2 IDE ports as I have two ide harddrives, dvdrw and one cdrom and it has to use ddr1 not ddr2

Abit Vt7 Mobo
3.4 Ghz Pentium 4
BFG 6800 Ultra
1 Gb Kingston PC3200
100 Gb Western Digital
160 Gb Maxtor
On Board Audio
480 Watts PSU
Windows Xp Prof

I have seen them before, when the 915 Chipset came out there was a board that merged a Socket 478 with PCI-express. But I have not seen that in a while. I think it was an Albatron Motherboard.

foxconn offers fairly cheap 865PE mobos. an 865PE chipset is intel bred and is one of the more premium designs for cheap price.
don't plan on finding a pci-e 478 mobo, they're nearly extinct. if you are serious about an intel setup, 755 would be the best route.

I know all about the inevitable extinction of socket 478 pci express boards. I need help in finding the best socket 478 agp board suitable for ocing on air and gaming.

My system is very simliar to yours:

Gigabyte mobo
P4 3.33ghz
EVGA 6800 ultra
1gb pqi turbo(2-2-3-6)
120gb western digital
Soundblaster Live! 24-bit
500watt psu
XP prof

I was thinking about upgrading my mobo a while back because it does sometimes cause random errors, but its liveable. However i realized how dumb it would be to buy a s478 mobo this late on, i decided to save my money for a new cpu+mobo upgrade. Your really not going to see much of an improvement as of now in performance unless your mobo is really crap, have you benchmarked? I do fine in 3DMARK05 scoring 5500, with my ultra at 425/1130, so it leads me to believe my mobo performing fine but may sometimes cause problems. If your really suffering from your problems i would recommend you to buy a cheap solution to hold out until your next upgrade.

i have an asus p4p800. definitely one of the best socket478 boards out there. ive heard that the p4p800-e deluxe/p4c800-e deluxe are among the best now.

just for your reference p4p series is the 865 chipset, while the p4c is the 875 chipset.

and my p4p800 oc's my 2.4C all the way up to 300FSB all on air.

good luck!

Abit IC7 series (ie. IC7 MAX3 has one of the best stock voltage options), along with Asus P4P800 and P4C800.

I'd say Asus P4C800-E Deluxe along with the DFI 875b rev.2. are the best out there. Don't know about their current pricing though off the top of my head. With any of these boards you'll definately be cpu limited before FSB limitation comes into play (given that you have 17 multiplier you'll never reach beyond 250FSB on air cooling, which means almost any non-intel branded motherboard will suffice). Also i875 chipset has PAT (essentially slight perfomrance boost due to memory latency/optimization if i recall correctly) enabled over i865, so choose among those.

Check Ebay for an extinct motherboard. Or for $350 you can get an ASrock ULi m1695, 3200+ AMD Socket 939, and 1GB of Corsair Ram.

If you want to re-use your old memory, then subtract $80 from $350 and the total comes to $280!

I love my Asus P4P800-SE, if the P4C version is as stable it should be great. I've tested my 3.0E at 3.9ghz, rock solid at 12 hours of Prime95 (two instances for HT).

Asus P4P800, or P4C800, or Abit IC7, those are some of the best 478 boards. I had the P4P800 running my 2.8ghz P4 @3.5ghz.

Ok Im very grateful for all your help, but now I need some more help. You guys got me sold on the Asus and Abit mobo but I dont really understand all the specs and jargons. I purchased my mobo and processor from Frys and the salesperson just picked it out for me.

Im currently using an Abit VT7 mobo and I guess the 3.4 p4 processor that is compatible with it. Now, can i use this processor with the Abit IC7 or the Asus? Do both of these boards allow me to connect 2 ide harddrives and 2 dvr drives? Thanks a million again.

Yes, you can use this processor on Abit IC7 or ASUS P4P800-E DELUXE and of course those board does allow 2 ide harddrives and 2 dvd drives.

I recommend ASUS P4P800-E DELUXE because its has great feature for overclock and plus, it have wifi included!

Dude, I am in the same boat as you are. I am also looking for a skt 478 with PCIe. There is a nice board out there, if it would just come out. Zipzoomfly has it listed here . Altho I have been looking for this to show up for about two months. I e-mailed them about it and thier response was as follows:

Zipzoomfly
Dear Jason,

Thanks for contacting ZipZoomFly!

We currently have no ETA (estimated time of arrival) as to when we will start carrying this item. However, we have forwarded your request for further consideration.

We appreciate your suggestion and look forward to meeting our customers needs.

Should you have any further questions, please call (510)739-1890.

Regards,

ZipZoomFly Customer Service

So your guess is as good as mine. If you want one of these boards you can buy it from overseas, I just personally don't want to buy from someone that far away. But, if you do like this board, do me a favor and get a notification from zipzoomfly so there will be another that wants it besides me. Maybe then they will get it in. Wish ya the best :)

EDIT: Here is where I found it overseas. NGENX-Asus P4RD-MX

I checked resellerratings but didn't come up with anything. Anyone know if NGENX are reputable? Any experiences?

On the Asus Board you can connect any four 40pin IDE devices that you like, four CD/DVD-ROM/Recorders, Four hard drives, four Zip Drives, ETC or any combination of them that you like.

Is he talking about a Digital Video Recorder? What does he mean by DVR?

To begin with, I meant dvdrw. sorry for the mistype.

Thanks all for your replies. Now it boils down to two mobos since I've discovered that the IC7 max 3 is too hard to find and too expensive. So out of the asus and abit ic7-g, which one would you guys recommend? Im looking for something that will do some overclocking but stability and quality is key. I dont want to have to do another upgrade in a while.

Yeah I have an Albatron MOBO on my old 478 rig, that board is awesome...stable with great features and great options for overclocking.

This is my board.

I came up with a possible solution for you last night. I know there is a Pentium 4(478 I think) /Athlon 64 Combination board out there that uses a daughter card for the second processor. I think the motherboard was made by ECS. My memory is sketchy but I know it does exist and I think It has PCI-express.

I've been running an Asus P4P800SE for several years now and the MB has been rock-solid stable the entire time... it also has excellent overclocking abilities.

I would assume the Asus P4C800 series is just as good if not better, but good luck finding one of those (I think the i875 chipset is harder to find then the i865 chipset).

Anyways, I have the P4P800SE (i865PE chipset) which is very, VERY stable. There are several versions of the P4P800, just get one that has the features you need/want. I find the SE is a good combination of features and price. The board retails for about $90. There are more expensive versions of this board, but I found they had nothing I would actually use, while the "SE" version had everything I wanted. I even liked my P4P800SE so much, I aquired a "spare" P4P800SE, as I have several socket-478 CPUs in the house, and I just love this board... I think it's the best MB for the socket-478 there is.

Good luck.
