i am running 3D studio max and hit a major wall when i go into the hair tutorials.

the computer i run Max on is an Opteron 175 dual CPU with 4 GB of DDR.

one of the motherboards i am hearing good things about, in terms of stability for overclocking

* Asus P5B Deluxe

then, for stability with no OC'ing, the intel Badaxe 975 board.

so, my questions -
* if you're running 8 GB of RAM with XP64, should you forget about OC'ing entirely ?
* which motherboard is best for limited OC'ing with a lot of RAM, using conventional [non-ECC] DDR2 ?

there are many fewer options for 2 x 2 GB RAM kits.

this looks like the standout -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220227
Patriot 5-5-5-12

i hear great things about the Asus P5B Deluxe, then there are individual reports of problems in the reviews at Newegg.

thanks a lot !

they're on back-order. i haven't ordered anything from
Fry's / Outpost on back-order. i'm wondering when Fry's-
stuff-that's-on-back-order usually ships, from the experience
of AT-ers.

You're using a 64 bit O.S., correct?
And a 64 bit version of Dragon Naturally Speaking?
Because a 32 bit O.S. can only use about 3.2 GB out of whatever memory is present.

yes, XP64.

Dragon doesn't advertise as a 64 bit program; i'll have to ask them.

3.2 GB out of 4 - sounds like the Opteron system i'm upgrading from !

you're making me think - oh my head hurts.

thanks for the info though !
