Best Motherboard for Opteron at boot?

I'm building a 939 Opteron system for a friend, but I'm not certain if all motherboards will boot up with an Opteron on a first try. One motherboard that's pretty solid is the 939 Epox Nforce 4 Ultra, but while I hear it can be made to support Opteron's with an update, is it possible to get it to work on a new build on your first try? Will I have to tear apart my machine and put my 3500+ Venice in his machine to get an update, and THEN switch put his Opteron in? Or will an Opteron 146 work at boot? Or if not for the Epox, what board? The board will be for gaming and serious overclocking.

Also, will the Epox Nforce 4 Ultra S939 work with Opterons at boot?

The link is in my sig.😉

Very few (if any) S939 boards officially support optys. However, if you scan the sigs of posters @DFI Street, you'll see an awful lot of optys on there. Including some of the DFI employed mods. As for the Epox, don't have one so I don't know. Might want to search the forums for that model and see if anyone with it is running an opty.

I already know someone running an Opteron 165 on an Epox Nforce 4, but he used a 3000+ Venice on the board before hand and got all the required updates so the Opteron worked when he finaly got one. But he had updated the bios to the latest version before hand, which is what I'm really asking. If the Epox supports Opterons out of the box, or if you're screwed if you have no other 939 cpu to begin with. There is a huge topic in this board about the Epox Nforce 4 Ultra, but I don't really have to time to look through many, many, MANY pages to see if such an issue has even been discussed.

The MSI K8N Diamond works with Opterons. The actual incomptaibility is with dual core processors, if the appropriate BIOS is installed it will boot up, but just not recognise the Opteron correctly. None of the boards claim to support Opterons but many nevertheless work fine.

I have a msi neo plat4 sli and it booted with a opteron 148 just fine. then i dl'd the new bios using the windows bios flash utility and everything is good to go, with a perfectly stable oc thats in my sig.
