I used to do a lot of movies for iPod touch using DVD decrypter and then handbrake. I can't recall exactly what I did, but haven't had to do much with my iPad2 until today. I'm going in a trip and put a couple movies on it to watch.

My wife already had Tron and I think she did it herself using defaults. Im currently doing Napoleon dynamite and it says it's gonna take 5 hours!!! Granted I'm only using a 5 year old centurion laptop but is there any tip or trick to shorten that time?

Ditch mp4 container?
Ditch h.264 codec?
Change the constant quality slider?

I don't want to lose too much video quality but will take suggestions.

TIA

Reducing the quality should improve the encode time, although it won't work miracles.

You may also want to look into an app called GoodPlayer. I no longer encode/re-encode anything for my iPad2, as it will play almost everything I throw at it including most 720p x264 .mkvs. Depending on what your source is -- you can just rip into a .mkv or .avi container and be done.

Very cool. Will check into that. Cuz, ya, the ripping ain't long at all, it's the recoding that kills for time! ugh!
