Dell is offering 20 % off and free shipping. These are some prices.

Dell P991 .........$367
Viewsonic PF790...$313
Samsung 900NF.....$340
Nokia 446 Pro.....$358
NEC FE 950+.......$275
Samsung 955DF.....$242 ($20 MIR available--> $222)

Which of these is the best deal for the money ?

I am familiar with the Dell P991, and I know that it is a great monitor, but are some are the cheaper models close enough in quality to still be great deals?

If those are you prices and you're on a tight budget, I would go for the NEC FE 950+. I hear that it's an excellent monitor.

Also, if you don't mind having an official refresh rate of only 75Hz @ 1280x1024, give the Samsung 955df some considerations. It's an outstanding monitor... more so with the price you can get it at.

Hopefully LXi will see this thread and post his two cents but I would say:

1) Dell P991
2) Samsung 900NF
3) Samsung 955DF

What is your budget?

Well I am living at home now for the summer and am using my dad's Dell computer with the P991 monitor. I am planning to build a new machine when I go back to school. I figured if these deals are really good, I might as well buy the monitor now. I could probably afford any one of them, and am leaning towards the Dell since I know first hand how nice it is, but I was just wondering if anyone has had outstanding experiences with any of the cheaper models. After all, the more I save here, the more I put into the system I build.

If warranty and service play a mnajor role in your decision then go with Dell or IBM products. You can't beat 24hr toll free support and free shipping on RMA's. I've read some opinions on the net and NEC charges for shipping on RMA's (Not good service, but good monitor). So go with what you are leaning towards because Dell makes good monitors using Sony's technology.

I would really have to say the Samasung 955df. My friend has one and damn is it pretty. I have been looking for a replacement for my 17" Trinitron, and I just may hop on at that price.

I have heard a lot of great things about the Samsung 900 NF and the experience I have had with the NEC FE 950+ has been good also. Most of the ones in your list here are good. I'm sure you would be happy with almost any of them.

I say go with the DELL P991, I love mine! I can run the thing at 1600x1200 at 85Hz! in RedHat Linux 7.1! I don't believe the Windows .inf file for the monitor lets it do that, but I suppose if you could hack the inf, you could.

<< Go with a refurb @ ubid.com they have cheaper monitors >>

What kind of nonsense is this? Yes, you can buy a cheaper *refurbished* monitor @ Ubid, but after you pay $60 for shipping a 19" monitor, you could have gotten a new one at Dell.

i own a Samsung 900NF and it's pretty nice.

What are the main differences between the Trinitron based Aperture grill monitors and the NF (Mitsu? ) aperture grill monitors? Characteristically, they look pretty similar, but I suppose there must be some difference.

I agree, Dell's 20% off with free shipping can't be beat.

Dollar for Dollar, can you beat the Samsung 955DF for the price? I'm asking because I just bought one. I figure that $222 shipped after MIR is just smoking.

I was going to go with a higher end monitor like the Dell P991, but figured that it's almost $150 more when you figure in the MIR. I figure that monitors will only get better and the prices will keep coming down. I think this one will last me until I can get a flat bodied 17" or 19". ;)

Since my buyers remorse is starting to kick in, do you think any of the monitors listed above are that much better than the Samsung 955DF for the price?

TIA,

Sal

no offense.. but wouldn't it depend on what you WIN it at? Seems like that may play a "small" role in what you said. You can win 19" reburbs from 240-270 for a good one (viesonic, sony), and cheaper for hitachi, etc. That INCLUDES shipping.

You CAN get good deals at ubid, just be sure to take into account the fact if it is refurbed, and shipping. and don't get caught up in the auction.
