Best monitor for graphics design or web design?

I don't know about best, but here's a vote for widescreen. That means LCD unless you're willing to go with an older wide-screen CRT.

Why a vote for widescreen in this case? I can't think of any reason why this would be advantageous for websites and graphics.

Really? I find the extra screen realestate invaluable in graphics and page design.

screen realestate doesn't favor widescreen necessarily. 20" 4:3 screen @ 1600x1200 > 20" 16:10 @ 1680x1050. The same hold true for widescreens in the 19" and under class (1280x1024 > 1440x900)

Of course once you get up to 23"+ then you pretty much only have widescreen as a choice and 1920x1200 is clearly > 1600x1200

Although I think that you might mean it comes more natural to use widescreen more effectively by working with two items side-by-side to a greater extent...

For a given monitor size (19", 20.1", etc...), you get more area with a non-widescreen monitor. But either way, both options give you a lot of room, if you get a 19" or above. I've only seen arguments for widescreen due to there being less letterboxing in widescreen movies and to get a better visual field in some games. I'm actually still debating aspect ratios for my next monitor purchase, which is why I asked. I hope this will also be helpful to the OP!

EDIT: BTW, I have done all of my website designing on a 17" CRT, so what the hell do I know about monitor purchases?!? 😱

Yeah, I agree on the math, but that area is less usable for me in "square mode." In widescreen aspects you can often get two full workspaces side by side.
