Best Monitor for $1700!??!

I'll make this quick cause I know you people have lots of other topics to read: I had a Sony GDM-F520 and I absolutely loved it yet it broke during a ship (the insurance is covering it so I have a lovely $1700 check). Now, I am at college and it would be wonderful if I could just use a LCD but I play games and I know that at this point LCD's and games just don't mix (or at least don't compare with the F520 picture). Basically, I would love to hear what you think is the best monitor (LCD or CRT) for around $1700. Thanks in advance!

With $1700, you can afford a good 18 inch LCD and a good 19 incher! Might want to look at a Sony or a Samsung 19 incher, then look towards a good LCD (dunno what brand is good though). Each should run around $800 for decent ones? (not high end), but you get the best of both worlds 😀 Just a thought

ever think about getting 3 monitors and using that new matrox card. that would be an unbelievable gaming rig!

Please list any good games you can think of that support multiple monitors. Thanx.

Oh man, that's a lot of money to burn on a monitor. I suggest one of those cool Apple Cinema displays (they're widescreen LCD's). Since you're in college, see if your bookstore has a good deal on one for students. You might be able to swing a 22" cinema display. Of course, if you're using a PC, you'd have to get one of those converters, but that shouldn't be too expensive.

Don't get the Apple Cinema Displays. First of all it has a very "different" resolution, something like 1600X864. Many (or most) games won't support this resolution. Playing other than its native resolution would look...weird. Go for a good NEC, Planar, Samsung, or Hitachi.

That's a good point, but couldn't you just get it to display a grey area around the edges (past 4:3)? There must be a reason for those wide screens besides movies...

Ok...so, I ask you this, am I going for an LCD or not? If LCD, I've heard that the Sony MD-81 (or something like that) is tops, and I guess at the moment the F520 is at the top end of the CRT game. Any reason not to buy either one? Any others you can think of? Would I get a similar picture on the MD-81? Lastly, what if I bought the F520 now, and then sold it when some new LCD's come out that have some better resolution and picture for games? Just a 2 AM thought. 🙂 Thanks in advance.

Take the money and invest it in a hot mutual fund (I'd recommend the T.Rowe Small Cap Fund, it's up 30% on the year, 15% in the past 2 years). 🙂 Or you could buy the Samsung 171P if you can find it anywhere, this is the one I'm looking to buy pretty soon, but I'm waiting for the price to come down. And yes, there may be an even better model than this badboy out now, I haven't been in the "loop" for a month or two. This model is the 17 incher, I'm sure they have larger ones out for more $$$. Just my $.02

get a 21" sony CRT and left over for a 18" SONY LCD SDM-M81...it has dual output dvi and analog....then if you still have some money left...get a new video card with dual monitor support like either a ati8500 or nvidia geforce4 4600...you can set up so you can play games on CRT and surf the web on LCD...BEST IN BOTH WORLDS...
btw...there is suppose to be a $100 rebate on the sony LCD...don't knwo if it is still around...
if not sony...get a hitachi or samsung...they are just as good...if not...iiyama...

Dell 2000FP LCD, a pretty good display even for playing games. No ghosting on my machine 733mhz & Geforce Pro DDR, it should run you around 1300-1400 and leave you some money for a few beer runs.

Thanks guys...yea, it really hurts to pay $1500 for a CRT but if you guys ever get a chance to see this F520 in action....wow. Anyways, it seems like I'll lean to the F520 and then see how the LCD game shapes up. Thanks for all of your input.

Sony GDM-FW900 24" 16:10 monitor. 2304X1440 80HZ. Simply amazing.

Get a HDTV tuner board and you'll have a really nice home-theater/PC setup.

I'm surprised that no one has suggested Viewsonic.

"Basically, I would love to hear what you think is the best monitor (LCD or CRT) for around $1700. Thanks in advance! "

Well, I personally like Viewsonic. Image quality is up there with the best of them (and so is the price).

First off I think you are full of it. No one in their right mind will have the GDM-F520 and use it just for playing games, which is all you are going to use it for. No one gets a "Professional" quality display just for this, and if mommy and daddy payed for it, they are fools.

I've seen Sony's 21" monitor (F520) and the FW900 24" widescreen. The widescreen is nice, but the F520 21" is nothing special. I compared it directly side-by-side to their "G" series, 19" and the quality is exactly the same. This is why I bought their G410R 19", because it was best in price/performance. Please stop showing off, as YOU probably never even owned the F520, and no one here at Anandtech cares nor wants people like you around in these forums.
