I just recieved in the modem and am helping a friend connect it. Unfortunately the modem never connects to the ISP SBC Global. The internal modem works fine and the userid is complete username@sbcglobal.net with the correct password. The External modem indicates it connects but then recieves a connection error upon trying to establish the PPP connection.

I've followed Best's troubleshooting steps and found that through Hyperterminal I never recieve a login prompt. I'm not sure why Windows Dial up works and Hyper Terminal and the 56KNet do not. But any suggestions would be appreciated.

The System is a Dell 3000
OS is Windows XP Home
Modem shows Power and the RDY is either solid or flashing.

Any assistance is appreciated.

I'm trying other access numbers now.

Thanks,
C

I would suggest that you should call the ISP and ask them if External Modem works with the connection that you are using.

DialUp services are not any more owned and run by most ISPs, they are leasing and using variety of general carriers (might be even AOL system), some systems has ?Strange? type of connection and might work with one type of Modems and Not with others.

Thanks Jack,
I haven't asked SBC who has their network in Austin. But I called Best Data, the tech seemed to know this as a known problem and recommended a firmware upgrade. I asked where I needed to go to download it and flash the router/modem, and he said I needed to ship it back. So that's what I'm going to do. Oh well 4 day old modem going back to the manufacturer for a firmware upgrade. Might have been my reseller's fault, or Best Data? Who knows. I'll keep this thread updated. For now no wireless networking / or dial up internet sharing for my friend.

:(
Thanks for your help. . .

Promised Update - The updated 56KNet firmware modem has arrived. I'll be testing it this week.

Thanks,

You're wanting to share a 56k connection? I hope it's not for anything besides text email or else you'll be wasting a lot of time setting up a network to find out you just don't have enough bandwidth with only 52k (that's the dial up limit right?) I'm also unclear why you'd use an external modem if you already have an internal modem that is working.

I'll be interested to know if you get it worked out though.

Update - the updated firmware from Best works. . .

Now to setup the Wireless Access Point and connect in the clients.

The biggest point of the network is sharing the printers and files not the Internet. When your stuck in the dark ages we take what we can get, and hope for WiMax solutions soon. . .

:)
Thanks

Why not get a pair of PCI ethernet cards for $8 a piece and use a crossover cable if all you're doing is file/print sharing?

Hi Kornphlake,

Mainly because my friend doesn't want his laptop plugged into his main desktop computer. This is a followup to an initial thread that Jack helped with. There are 3 systems involved 2 desktops the main and a second one less than 25 feet away in another room and a laptop with wireless g enabled.

Jack's solution works very seamlessly even if the Internet connection is slow since its dialup. BestData 56K Router/Modem with a Wireless Access Point, setup the Router/Modem as the Gateway and plug in the Access point and walla a Wireless Home Network sharing a dial up connection. Files/Printers and Internet all shared, and it works wherever in the house he happens to carry the laptop.

Thanks,
C
