I'm a fan of the Xecuter, but all in all they all offer the same functionality - it's the software/BIOS that you load that lets you do stuff.

You can, but than you can't play on live, read about the hacks at xbox-scene.com

Yes you can flash the bios without a modchip, but their won't be an on'off switch if you want to go on xbox live. You don't need a new harddive unless you want to store games/movies directly on the hard drive.

www.xbox-scene.com has everything you ever want to know about modding an xbox and replacing the harddrive.

co-worker has a smartxx and he loves it...other good one these days is the Xenium

both are fairly expensive though...older chips work almost as well (with less features) and can be had for slightly less dough.

I had this done to my xbox, and as far as i know, you can use live. I have a switch on the side that makes the xbox boot from the normal bios, and another switch to block any bios from being written to

Yes, that refers to the TSOP. I'll need a chip once halo2 comes out so I can play on XBL, but for now the TSOP works fine for snes Emulation :)

No modchip; straight software hack with a swapped hard drive. It was a pain in the ass to set up, but it's working good enough for me at this point. The only thing is that I lose custom audio tracks, but the games I play don't support the function so I don't consider it a loss.

I installed about about 6 appleX V for people. They are like $20 and work fine, no flashing or anything needed. Its a simple chip but how many of all these extra features on the other chips do you actually use/need?. Turns on and off with power button control also so no need of a addon pcb. The only prob I ever had was a installed executer 2.3. Thing would only frag and external programmer did no good. Ripped it out and installed a apple.
