Hey guys its about time I upgraded my computer (3000+, Asus K8V SE, 1 GIG Corsair Value Select) and I was wondering what would be the best mobo to pair it with. I would also like to ask what the difference between 939 and AM2 is and which one would be better to get for an upgrade. Also I have read that one of these processors needs to take in DD2 RAM?

If you're upgrading now and don't mind getting new memory, go for the e6600 conroe. If you want to use your old dram, go for socket 939. Am2 is actually cheaper, but requires ddr2 and won't give you any real performance advantage over 939.

what kind of memory does the conroe use? and how much $$ are we looking at? I don't want to spend too much on the processor because I heard AMD is dropping the prices on their 939 and AM2 processors on Monday.

With AMD X2 prices falling into the basement, I would go for a nice 939 board like an ASUS or DFI board. The minimal performance difference between the newer chips is not worth the extra monies at this point, and the 939 chipsets are well established and the drivers are mature.

The socket 939 will let you reuse your ram and a good board can be had for $100. You can even find NForce 3 boards that will allow you to reuse your video card but that will limit your video upgrade in the future.

Conroe uses DDR2 just like AM2 does, cheapest upgrade path is a socket 939 CPU period, because all you need to buy is a CPU.
