Its for a friend. I'm getting him a XP 1.4ghz but I need to know whats the best mobo currently out.

Help an Intel zealot out will ya?

Of course it is...you are just paying more for Asus quality...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Asus makes fabulous platforms...
 
The MSI K7T266 Pro2 RU, with Raid & USB 2.0 support can be found at www.azzo.com for $159.
The 266a VIA chip is preferred to the older 266(non-a).
If you can wait a few months, mboards with "fail-safe" CPU overheat protection should be ready.
