I've been doing some research trying to decide which MOBO and Processor to get. I started out ready to do a full overhaul, but from the look of things, there is a great deal of technology on the horizon, and I don't think right now is the time to do a full out upgrade. I want upper level performance, however I don't want to pay for the best of the best. I'd like to spend no more than $220 on MOBO and Processor combined. What do you folks think I should get? I want to overclock as well, and am not sure which is the best MOBO to get for this. below are a few things I

1.) from what I've read, the best MOBO socket to go with in my position would be Socket 754. My reasoning being that, while not the fastest, I feel that it is the most bang for my buck. I plan on doing some overclocking, so will get a little additional speed out of that. From what I've heard and read, the performance increase which one gets from going with the 939 is not worth the extra money.

2.) As I said, I want to overclock. From what I've read, the best chip for this would be found in the mobile athlon series of chips. I've noticed that on Newegg, there are 35 watt and 45 watt versions. Is the 35 watt better? if so, why?

3.) Nforce or VIA?

4.) Which brand/model MOBO is the best for overclocking and general performance/stability?

5.) What is the best memory for overclocking? (the price of memory is not factored into the $220 stated at the top) I'm currently considering getting two sticks of Kingston 512 MB 333 MHZ DDR-PC2700 DIMM CL2.5 PC Memory. I have gift certificates to amazon.com, so these will be free. Are these the best choice? For about $40 more, I could get the Kingston 512MB HyperX DDR 500MHz PC4000 Ram, would the increase in performance be noticable?

Thats all I can think of right now. I appreciate any and all input.

i personally would go with an abit nf7-s rev2 with a 2600+ mobile. As for the memory, if its only costing you 40 bucks to get hyperx, I'd go with that.

Take either but save some $ and get a 2400+ they are known to go the same amount as the 2600+. Also take not the DFI Infinity series is awesome at FSB OCing.

Dont go Kingston hyper X either, its horribly slow compared to OCZ, Mushin, Corsair... yah know.

when it comes to RAM, what is the difference between PC 2700 and PC 3100, or PC 4000 for that matter? Is there a significant performance increase?
Also, which is better, two sticks of 512mb, or one stick of 1024mb?

also, what is the difference between nforce2 and nforce3?

There is a signifant performance increase with the higher speed ram. I'd recommend getting the pc 3200 with two sticks of 512mb (good cost/performance ratio). If your chipset supports dual channel ram (which most of the recommended boards do) you will get a decent performance increase.

I just got a 35w athlon xp-m 2400+ and a abit nf7-s motherboard. The 35w is usually better than the 45w as they are meant to run on low power, so better chips are picked out. I'd either get the abit nf7-s or one of the dfi motherboards.
