Best Mobo for a PIII 1gz System?

A friend of mine is looking to do a complete upgrade (mobo, cpu, ram), but only has $525 to spend. I prefer to stick with an Intel P3 1gz cpu. What is the best mobo to use with this cpu? Stability is the primary concern, and any extras on the mobo are just that, extras. No over-clocking, just solid performance.

I'm running a P3 1 Ghz with a Tyan Tiger 230.. probably the most upgradable motherboard for a god price. Never had any problems with it and if you dig up an extra 200 bucks you can go from 1 Ghz to 2!

Abit VH6-II or a Tyan S1854 Trinity 400. I like both of these boards & have mades several systems with both. The Tyan board is the most stable board I have ever seen (more stable than any 815 or BX board), but lacks alot of nice overclocking features (no problem since the 1GH does not have much headroom for overclocking). The Abit board is more overclocker friendy.

Both can be bought for @ $100 shipped.


Edit: The tyan board has no on-board sound either.

I have an abit sh6 815e mobo, an p3 1ghz slot 1 cpu and 256 megs of crucial cas2 pc133 memory.
All for $370.00 The mobo has the latest bios flash and has soft menu 3 plus voltage adjustments!
The cpu is retail and has 2 3/4 years left on the warranty! Both the cpu and the mobo have the receipts!

I have the CUSL2-LS, and it is silid as a rock. Setting the SCSI was a little tricky, but it just runs.

Another vote for the Abit socket 370 SA6R(w/ raid), SA6(without raid), SH6(slot 1) or the latest ST6( socket type but not sure where to find one). I personally have the SA6R and it's rock solid stable.

I use a SuperMicro SSA-370. SuperMicro motherboards aren't mentioned often on the forums here in AnandTech because it is not an overclocker's motherboard.

My concerns were just as yours...stability.

I have to say the SuperMicro board is the highest quality board I have ever owned. It comes with a lot of extras that you never see with other motherboards such as a good quality CPU fan. Mainly, I got what I wanted...stability and solid performance.

Why get an 815EP board when you can get one of the newer Tulatin boards? It'll be compatible with both the newer .13 PIIIs as well as older Celerons and PIIIs.

Abit looks to be the first Abit VH6T

I have built several systems with the Intel D815EEA2L board, it has very good performance, built in Lan, and the AD1885 audio chipset which when paired with the new SoundMax 3.0 drviers offers excellent sound. Of course, no overclocking with this board but it is very very stable. You can get the EEA2 in several different versions and the EPEA2 board with the 815EP chipset.
