I recently purchased a socket 478 P4 2.26 Northwood (533). Im looking to setup a system which is relatively inexpensive yet powerful (aka overclocked) to hold me down until the next batch of chips/mobos/OS come out. Which motherboard should I use to successfully overclock the chip without spending an arm and leg? What kind of performance can I expect from the chip? Do I need to increase the voltage, and change from OEM cooling to another modality? . Ideally I would like to have a board which allows the use of more than 4 IDE drives (like my outdated abit SA6R). Onboard video would be nice since I don?t game, but do watch DVD,MPEGS, etc, or I can buy a decent video card if you can recommend one. Also any recommendations as to good quality yet inexpensive ram. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just ordered a soyo 865pe board. It's listed in pricewatch under motherboards and 865 for only $25 shipped. It's a refurbished board, and may not come with accessories. Two soyo boards are offered at $25 by the same vender, but the first one has only 3 dimm slots. For video, e-wiz had a gigabyte 9250 agp for $33 that would work fine for most applications. The soyo board should have some overclocking settings. I would set the cpu voltage at about 1.55 for overclocking, and set the pc3200 at 333 or a 5:4 ratio, whichever setting is available. I use a standard Intel heatsink, and have no heat issues with my 2.8c (running at 3500 when overclocked). For memory, I use pqi pc3200. Samsung, crucial (made by micron), and kingston all work fine. Just select 2 identical sticks of 512 meg. You don't need to pay extra for so called premium memory, such as corsair or ocz. And you don't need so called dual channel memory, but if the price is right, I would get the 2 matching sticks. A good price for 2 sticks is less than $100.
