Best mini laptop?

What about a ChromeBook. That should fit the bill. You don't get MS Office, but it has alternatives that are more than good enough for "light" use.

You might actually check out the offerings at your local walmart before you commit to anything. They've got some decent units int the $300 range. Since we're talking about an elderly user you have to take eyesight into consideration and I wouldn't even think about a screen that is less than 15". I personally think that my 17" screen is too small when reading on my laptop and my tablet is just real difficult. I wouldn't suggest such a small screen for my own parents to use knowing how difficult it can be to read.

Thanks, I went to walmart and saw some interesting options. With the touch screen, Windows 8 isn't bad, my first experience with it.
