Best midrange DX10 vid card?

So I may be looking at a video card replacement if a recent hardware problem can be blamed on my vid card. I figure if I have to buy something it might as well be DX10 (yes, I run Vista). This is for my main dev box and I don't really game that much anymore but I want to push some pixels while I do my XNA stuff. So I guess something in the mid-range would be good. I don't want to OC and I could give a sh!t about hdcp. Two DVI outs are necessary.

Can anyone recommend something along those lines? Even if the best thing would be wait a month that's cool... if you know of something coming along at about that time lay it on me. I could gimp along with a cheap vid in the meantime.

Thanks in advance.

New ATI cards are coming out at the end of April, possibly putting price pressure on all Nvidia cards. Either way there will be more options. At this point it's only speculation which cards will be better, but HD 2900XT is rumoured to have 512Mbit memory interface with 320 stream processors. This can possibly result in a very fast mid-range offering by ATI.

There is always the potential for X1950xt series to fall to $100 price range or 8800GTS to come down in value. In addition, Nvidia is releasing 8600GT/S series on April 17th. But so far their "leaked" benchmarks have been disappointing.

Since you don't play games, what is the video problem you've been having and how certain it is hardware vs. software/driver related? If you are not going to play games, even $100 on a graphics card seems like a waste of $$$.

The x1950xt isn't a DX10 part is it?

Well Vista is a native DX application, and I write games as well. I don't need the shiznit of all DX10 cards to get 90fps in Crysis.

Thanks for your input on the cards

No one knows what the best mid-range DX10 card will be. I can tell you, as long as ATI doesn't blindfold themselves and punch themselves in the face, ATI will probably have a much much better mid-range DX10 card.

The problem is you might have to wait until June or July to see it. The only R600 to be released is the R600XT 80nm to get rid of their old revision 1 R600 chips. Everything else ATI related is going to be the 65nm architecture.

If you plan on going SLI and buying another in the future, 8600GTS isn't that bad of an option. Two of them nearly double their performance, which speaks volumes considering SLI has never had that kind of performance jump before.

Well, no one but AMD/ATI knows what their DX10 boards will be like. They haven't been released yet.

Today you only have the 8800's that are DX10 compatible. The cheapest 8800 runs around $260 after mail in rebates through newegg. If you have to replace a video board as you mentioned I would consider something like that. It's doubtful that the 8600's will be faster and there is no performance information available on the R600's yet.

If you can live with your current board for a little bit longer It wouldn't be a bad idea to wait a month or so to re-evaluate the situation. Especially since there is no rush to go fully DX-10 immediately. We're still a month or two away from the first DX-10 game patches and releases.

I think ATI will offer the better midrange cards, but it will be a few more weeks to be certain.

Yeah...exactly. OP might as well be asking about DX11 cards. That said, ATi is looking promissing for DX10.

Midrange Dx10 cards don't really exist yet. The closest thing you can find now is the 320MB version of the 8800GTS, which can be found for under $300 now. The midrange from both companies should be released in about two more weeks.

Agreed, if the information we have about the 8600gts is correct anyone considering it would do well to scrape up the few extra bucks for the 8800gts 320mb.

Thats a LIE...

High and mid rande ATI cards will be released at end of april or first week of May. and they will probably be better price/performance than nVidia....

Meanwhile nVidia tomorow will release the new mid range cards...

Actually right now the GTS 320 is a low end DX10 card. The 640 is mid-range and the GTX is high end.

Since there are no other DX10 cards to compare to. It's just that right now an entry level DX10 card will run you about $260.

That does make sense in a way. Considering that's the companies, not the consumers, that decide what price point cards are sold at...
