In WinXP, what's the best way to do this? I first used XP's default, then installed 23.11 but want to try 22.81 (I hear 23.12 is no good either).

Where in WinXP can you set to standard VGA drivers like the usual 9x method?

Also what's the best way to get rid of the 23.11's first?

Is the best method is delete old drivers, set to standard VGA, reboot, dont let XP install it's drivers, then install 22.81?
BTW, when I originally installed 23.11, I just used the exe, w/out getting rid of XP's default drivers first. Anything I need to do to get rid of them (can they even be removed?), or where they overwritten?

Does it help any to install drivers in safe mode?

You don't need to. In fact you never really needed to do this unless you were using Windows 95 and you were switching around old DOS VGA adapters that weren't plug in play.

Control panel -> add/remove programs and then reboot.

The best method is really just to uninstall the old drivers and reboot (in fact in most cases that's the only choice you have). XP will ususally install a standard VGA adapter regardless of what you do (if it doesn't, cancel it) so don't worry about it. Then simply run the installer with the new drivers or manually update them from the device manager, reboot and you're done.

I did get bit a couple times when I forgot to change to standard PCI adapter before changing out a PCI PnP video card (on Win95).

That is one of the things I like about XP....it makes it real easy to switch out video drivers. Love it!
