Best method for isolating a server on a home network

I'm planning on building a LAMP server and I'm unsure of the best way to keep my network safe. This project is strictly for the purpose of learning more about administration and security. So if you can suggest different methods to achieve the stated goal I will happily do the needed research, I just need a little direction to get started.

Some initial ideas

DMZ
hardware based firewall using a linux box with multiple lan cards

I'd use two routers, and connect the server and the second router to the first one and use the second one for your network. With that and a proper firewall configuration you should be fine.

I'd just use a semi-managed switch with VLANs. Cascading routers can cause problems, though this is possibly the cheaper way to go.
