Best method for electric guitar -> PC?

What is the best method(s) to record my guitar on my PC?

I've got a Flextone II with a send and return loop, and a headphone out - pic of rearhere (ebay auction, not mine, hope pic works), and a Peavey Studio Pro 112 that also has an effects loop. Can I use one of these to the PC, to be able to use the effects in the Flextone?

Or can I plug the guitar straight to the PC and put a pedal in between, or use effects software?

bwahaha. the answer to your question is IN THE PIC. read those instruction below the effects loop. you should use the headphone output on the Flextone into the line in on your soundcard.

get an adapter that goes from guitar chord size to headphone size and plug it in. or if you have an effects stations like i do, plug it into that and from that to your computer. *good* effects software can get somewhat expensive, though.

IIRC, the flextone already has a 1/4" headphone output, so no adapter is needed. additionally, the headphone output is speaker emulated, so there is no need for an effects station or any of that. in fact the flextone basically IS an effects station, it just has an amp connected to it. basically a POD with a power amp.

edit: doh! of course you'd need an adapter on the COMPUTER end of things to take the 1/4" down to 1/8". You'd also want the cable and adapters to be stereo if you want to record in stereo. otherwise, just use a guitar cable and set your recording software to record in mono, from the left channel of the stereo line-in.

It also shows a MIDI output if you can find a PC card with MIDI inputs for your PC

the MIDI output is to send and receive signals to change effects settings, it is not a music related output in the case of guitar equipment. (with the exception of the specially-made roland equipment, and even then you couldn't use this port for that).

example: you have a rack of a effects units and a big pedal controller, all MIDI enabled. you step on "1" and it switches ALL your equipment to the "1" settings, which you have programmed ahead of time. so maybe you get distortion from one box, a delay from another, and compression on a third. step on "2" and box 1 might switch to a mild distortion, box 2 to nothing (just pass through), and box 3 to reverb. you can have more than 3 boxes, of course. the MIDI ports on the flextone allow it to be one of those boxes, or also to use one of those pedal controllers to control it.

What would be the best software to record with? (maybe Cool Edit Pro, Goldwave, Total Recorder, Easy Sound Recorder?)

Can you point me to some effects software? I imagine they might record also...

bwahaha, it's not that simple bud. First, it says nothing about recording with a PC. Haven't you ever heard there's no dump questions? You may take chances, but I don't want to blow up my PC. You shouldn't just do things like this without knowing it's OK first, since impedance could be wrong, etc. Also the Flextone has AIR and does something different than normal when you use the headphone out, and then something else when you use the effects out.

Blow up your PC? With the megawatts of power pulsing through that electrified axe of ownage you have?

Exactly 😛 I've done it dozens of times. I do find it easier to just tap the computer into the headphone out.

Huh? Not sure what you're point is. I said nothing about watts. Ever heard of impedance?
Regardless, my point was simply that I don't go around plugging unrelated items into each other until I know for sure it's OK to do.
