That would depend on which Metallica you are refering to. Many people consider their older records MUCH better than the new stuff even though they were not "hits."

My top 5:
5. Sanitarium
4. Master of Puppets
3. Ride the Lightning
2. One
1. Fade to Black

There you go,, hope you like!

4. One
3. Nothing Else Matters
2. Unforgiven
1. Harvester of Sorrow
or if you like Bass solos, plug Anethesa off Kill em' all in there

Nothing Else Matters, Unforgiven, Sleepz (the version of the song on the S&M album -- awesome!) -- off the top of my head.

If you want to get a good idea of Metallica, just listen to the Black album. That's what started me, and it's tremendous. Also, check out S&M which is truly a work of art. I like the remakes of the older songs on there more than the originals.

Metallica is probably the best band for listening to while working out. :D

1. The Unforgiven
2. Until It Sleeps
3. The Memory Remains
4. For Whom The Bell Tolls
5. The Frayed Ends Of Sanity

That's only for right now, my favorite Metallica songs just keep rotating, get sick of some, listen to some others. It's easy when an uber-band has 125+ tracks released since 1983.

what about 'am i evil?' ...? no one ever mentions the early 80's metallica stuff anymore, before they became mainstream. oh, and 'last caress/green hell' is a cover song, but i'm sure you knew you that. everything on garage days, garage days revisited, and garage days re-revisited are cover songs.
how about stuff from their first albums... kill 'em all... no life till leather... ???

I haven't heard anyone mention this one, but I think their best song might have been a remake of an old song by a group called Budgie - "Breadfan". After that, For Whom The Bell Tolls is good and One is a classic.....

"what about 'am i evil?' ...? no one ever mentions the early 80's metallica stuff anymore, before they became mainstream. oh, and 'last caress/green hell' is a cover song"

Am I Evil is a cover song, it isn't even on the original Kill 'em All album though it was on the original Garage Days(the one with Dave Mustaine playing lead guitar before Kirk joined the band).

"1. To Live is to Die (no lyrics, but awesome)"

"When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale fates which men miscall their lives. All this I can not bear to witness any longer. Can not the kingdom of salvation take me home?"

Cliff Burton- 1986(unfinished lyrics that are in the song)

Several mentions of Breadfan, and while that is my favorite(man was that a b!tch to find in the US until Garage Inc came out), I wouldn't say it is the best.

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Creeping Death

Call of the Ktulu(instrumental)

Welcome Home(Sanitarium)

Master of Puppets

That isn't a list of my favorites, but what I consider to be their best songs. Call of the Ktulu would quite likely rank higher if it wasn't for the fact that instrumentals tend to make people think less of a "song".
