Honestly, I think people get way to caught up on memory. For just about every application the timings don't do much. I spent a lot of money once on advanced timing memory and didn't see anything change. I am sure that in memory intensive situations it helps, but for gaming, I dont really think so. However, if you are planning on doing a little overclocking faster RAM (that is to say sticks rated to higher bus speeds) may be good idea. If you really wanna spend $300 on memory I would suggest Corsair XMS PC3700 2x512MB Pack. It goes for $285 on newegg and comes with neat lookin heat spreaders. You also can't loose with Corsair memory.

best memory ?

something that works at the speed you need it to at the price you want it at. for a few extra bucks, i tend to just get ram from crucial, and i recommend it to friends. great company, great service. prices and free shipping are in line with everyone else

look up to what your mobo manufacturer suggestions for compatibility. it's only in overclocking that you need higher-rated frequency, timings, etc. if not overclocking then, any of the above that is compatible with your mobo.

other good personal experiences: geil, infineon, micron, samsung.
