best media player ?

My WMP6.4/9/Classic won't play AVI files (regular or DIVX/XVID) anymore after messing with codecs (uninstalling/reinstalling). Yes I even tried ffdshow. No go with WMP (says unsupported format - GSPOT shows all is ok). Anyone know how to blow it away and start all over with codecs ?

What's the best media player out there in your opinion ? Hopefully bloat-free.

well, if your codecs aren't working properly, I suppose your screwed with any media player. on the other hand, have you tried the included DivX player that comes in the DivX package?

my bad i didnt see that 9 hiding 😱

You know.. Totem on linux will even play most incomplete avi files, provided the beginning is intact. 😉 I never messed with codecs manually; I think the gentoo portage just calculated those as appropriate dependencies and downloaded them.. Totem also has a nifty auto-thumbnailer.

Yes, other players like BSPlayer and Divx Player work fine with AVI. It was just WMP (any) that had problems.

I just installed the KLite Codec Pak and it works now ! I swear I tried that one too (that and ffdshow being the 2 most popular) and it didn't help. Well whatever, it works! Thanks BaboonGuy.

Still, what do you guys think is the best alternative media player ?

The header data is stored at the end of an AVI file.

I've tried most players known to man, and in my opinion, the best is BSPlayer. It has tonnes more features than MPC, and just seems to offer a smoother experience. However, it's worth having MPC or VideoLAN at the same time, as they can both play Quicktime/Real without needing to have the actual applications installed.

i love the older version of BS PLAYER . the newer one is a bit too much for me.

as someone mentioned above .. if your codecs are smashed, don't expect any other media players to work as well. though it might work.
