well the most popular motherboard here on these forums seems to be the epox 8k7a. i personally have one and it runs great. i also have a 256mb stick of crucial 2100 ddr ram. runs great, and it overclocks well too.

the epox has an amd761 northbridge and via686b southbridge
its probably the best board you can buy (everyone here on the forums recommends it)
for ram, id also go with crucial (256mb of pc2100 non-ecc)

Another vote for the EPoX 8K7A, you might also consider the RAID version (8K7A+) if your friend is into that. And I also have to agree 256Mb of Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM is the way to go. My system has been running perfectly ever since I built it, this is probably the best mobo/RAM combo I have ever had.

Might want to see if he'll wait for the Nforce!;) Don't know for sure what it will be like......but I know I'd hate to build right now if it blows everything else away and is out in a month or two!;)

ya but nforce won't be out until next year and by then your talking new technology. blah.. no matter the company new tech is always expensive and it sucks with bugs. Better off with tech that works. ya know?

After reading the previous message i'm thinking of getting the epox board 8kt7a (i think it was) with 512MB pc2400 of ram.. or 256 pc2400 (does pc2100 overclock well?). Crucial i don't think offers pc2400 ddr-sdram? i was going to wait for the Abit kg7 though...
